I just heard the news and I am so incredibly sad to hear about it. Greg Giraldo, to me, is and should always be regarded as a legendary comic. Pure genius full of untapped, and now, unrealized potential.

Greg Giraldo was literally the first comic I ever watched live, unless you count the Emcee and the middle act (who happened to be Mike Speenburg), and in that case, Greg was the first comic I ever cared enough about to pay money to see. And he absolutely did not disappoint, and he’d been my favorite comedian ever since.

DJ, Greg, and I circa 2007, popping my comedy club cherry.

Last Feburary I was given an opportunity to work for him at Zanies in Nashville and it was a dream come true. I don’t get nervous alot, and I remember the first night sitting in the green room, and actually being a little nervous about meeting him. About five minutes before showtime, Greg busts into the hallway from outside wearing a ratty toboggan, and he is literally screaming into his phone– “Yeah? Well FUCK YOU! I hope you fucking choke on it you fucking bitch!”

He got in a couple more profanity laced jabs before he threw his phone down the hallway, walks into the green room, shakes my hand and just kind of smirks before he says, “Women.”

That was my immediate impression of Greg: hot-headed and self-destructive to a fault, but absolutely incredible at turning a negative into a positive. We hit it off as well as I could imagine a beginner like me could hit it off with a headliner like him. I’d like to think that had something to do with me, but Greg was just such an incredibly open and approachable guy that I think he probably got along with most everybody that well. Something I didn’t know about him, and something I think a lot of people don’t know, is how freaking talented the guy actually was. Not just at stand-up comedy. The guy was freakin’ ridiculous on the guitar. Check out this video of Greg playing my guitar backstage:

Greg Giraldo playing my guitar

I watched his show every night and I noticed the way he would bring up a premise, punch it, and then throw out a hurricane of escalating tags that would, by the end, leave the audience in an uproar. I marveled at Greg’s ability to elevate and build upon his own foundation, and it completely influenced my own writing and delivery.

We talked about a lot of things that week and hung out often. He talked about relationships, and how much he loved his kids, being a single dad in the comedy business. Something I related to a lot. At the time, Greg was on the wagon, and recounted to me a lot of his issues with drinking and drugs. He told me a lot of horror stories, and after the shows, we’d go to downtown Nashville and I saw first hand what a struggle that was for Greg. He definitely had his demons, but apparently all the greats do, and Greg was no different.

I don’t want to say something stupid like, “Greg is in a better place right now, laughing it up with Carlin” because I think they both would have made fun of me for saying something like that. None of us, no matter how much faith anyone has, knows what happens to us once we’re gone. I do hope he is in a better place now. I want to spin this negative into a positive too, but it’s hard to do. The only good thing I can see coming out of this is that Greg Giraldo will hopefully, and rightfully so, be remembered as a comic genius who ranks up there with the all time greats. I, for one, will miss him. Both his creativity, and the personal side of him that I got to know all too briefly. God bless, Greg.

Hello all who might venture by here every now and then to see what I am up to. I realize it’s been a little while since I have updated this B because unfortunately, Facebook takes more time than necessary. I’ve decided that I am going to try to do much better about keeping the 4 of you who care about my comedy career in tune with what I am doing.

First off– the new CD. I have a working title, and it is being pressed into production as soon as the photo shoot gets finished (hopefully this week). Then it will be made available to the masses and all of you can just laugh and laugh and laugh…

My first real headlining gig last week at South Street Comedy Club in Jackson, TN was a rousing success. I have closed some shows before and done a few one-nighters here and there but it was nice to see that I was able to actually draw some people. Harvey said it was one of the best weekends he’s had all summer. I was also personally excited because I have about 20 minutes of new material since I recorded my CD last month that I’ve been trying out and it seems to be going pretty smoothly so far (that’s my modest way of saying it’s hilarious).

This week I am in Chattanooga at the Comedy Catch, actually one of my favorite clubs, and I am performing sans guitar. THAT’S RIGHT!! I said it, I am doing all of my time with no songs. I think that is definitely worth a road trip, but I might be biased, so whatevs.

This weekend I will be performing at Sidesplitters Comedy Club in Knoxville, TN. I am opening for Michael Palascak, who has been on Late Night w/ Letterman & The Very Funny Show on TBS.

More importantly, for all of you Killianaires out there (I don’t assume to know how many of you there are), I am recording my first ever FULL-LENGTH live comedy CD. I’ll be recording a good portion of my stand-up material, along with classic songs like She’s Got the Gays, Stalker, A Minor, and a lot of new ones too that many of you haven’t heard. So be looking for more announcements as it becomes available.

Either way, if you’re anywhere near the area (I’m talking to you, America!), come out and check out the show!

Hey everyone! This new year is turning out to be quite the year. First, I received the first season of “Lost” as a Christmas present, and I watched it, and now I am broke because I subsequently went out and bought the following second, third, fourth, and fifth seasons. So a hearty thanks to the person who bought me that gift, leading me on a chain of events that left my wallet empty. How about next year you just get me a crack pipe, with only one hit of crack? Sound good? Great.

Next, I’ve almost gained enough inner strength and self-respect to remove my nipple rings. Almost.

Also, I’m planning on recording my first full-length LIVE CD later on in March. I’ll be debuting art work and clips as they come available for me, so that’s exciting, right? Right? If you have any title ideas, feel free to e-mail them to me and maybe if you’re lucky I’ll use it without giving you any credit whatsoever.

Lastly, I have added a slew of 2010 dates already for the 1st quarter in around five different states, so more and more opportunities are opening up for you to come see me live in action. Some of those dates include appearances with Tom Green, Jon Reep, John Heffron (both winners on Last Comic Standing), and Greg Giraldo. I know, awesome, right? I’m like a wee little girl with a pony. Thanks to everyone who even cares enough to come by and read this stuff. You are the people whom I will never steal money from.
